History

Winchelsea occupies two local government areas. These are the Surf Coast Shire and the Shire of Colac Otway. Nearby localities include Ombersley and Buckley. Before it gained its current name, it was called Austin’s Ford. This was after a Thomas Austin, who lived in the area from 1837.

Winchelsea is a small, historic town. It has a railway station that dates from 1876. It is home to the third oldest pub in the state, the Barwon Hotel. A number of places within the town are heritage-listed. These include the Ingleby Homestead and the Barwon River Bridge.
