Torquay is a seaside resort in Victoria, 21km south of Geelong. It’s the gateway to the Great Ocean Road and has a population of over 10,000.

History

Before white settlement, Wathaurong Aborigines lived in the area.

It was a popular spot for picnics from the 1860s. First called Spring Creek after the watercourse along the southern-western edge, it was renamed Puebla in 1882. James Follett settled there in 1871. Coming from the seaside town of Torquay in Devon, England, he suggested the name and it was officially changed in 1892. The Post Office opened in 1984.

In 1946, the Torquay Surf Life Saving Club was formed. Today it is the oldest and largest club in Victoria.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Torquay is famous for its surf beaches. The world famous Bells Beach and Jan Juc are located in the towns south-west outskirts. Most of the world-famous surf companies including Rip Curl and Quiksilver were founded in Torquay.
