Mansfield is a town in Victoria nestled at the foot of the Victorian Alps. It’s named after its counterpart in Nottinghamshire, England, and has a population of more than 4,300.

History

Once called Mt Battery, Mansfield began life when gold was discovered close to its current location. A post office was built in 1858, and the town joined the railway line in 1891. Mansfield is part of the Ned Kelly legend, as it’s the site of a marble monument to the constables killed by his gang in 1878.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Mansfield is known as a water skiing hotspot. It’s close to Lake Eildon and Lake Nillahcootie, which both attract many visitors during the summer months. It’s also very near to Mt Buller and Mt Stirling. Both of these peaks are very popular with mountain bikers. The Mansfield District Racing Club keeps horse riders busy, and Mansfield Golf Course does the same for golfers. The town features plenty of excellent dining and accommodation options for tourists.
