History

Walkerston, West of the city of Mackay, lies on the Peak Downs Highway. Nearby localities include Alexandra and Pleystowe.

Prior to becoming Walkerston, the town was referred to as either Scrubby Creek or Baker’s Creek. Walkerston had a train station from the late 1800s. It was part of the Pioneer Valley railway. Passengers had to board from the ground before a platform was installed.

Walkerston is a small, historic suburb. Its amenities include a post office and two primary schools.

The town is home to numerous heritage-listed sites. Greenmount Homestead, for example, is today a museum. It provides a look back at the architecture of the early 1900s. Another heritage-listed site is the Walkerston State Butcher’s Shop.
