Townsville is a city on the north-eastern coast of Queensland. It is 1,348 kilometres north-north-west of Brisbane. Its population is over 180,300.
History
The area was once home to a number of indigenous tribes. These include the Bindal and Nawagi groups. The Wulgurukaba claim to be the traditional owners of the area.
The first Europeans recorded a local landing in 1819. They were Captain Phillip Parker King and botanist Alan Cunningham.
In 1846, James Morrill was shipwrecked from the ‘Peruvian’. He lived in the area with the Bindal people for 17 years. He was later found by white men and returned to Brisbane. The first European settlers arrived in the area the same year.
Tropical Cyclone Althea hit Townsville and surrounds on Christmas Eve 1971. It was a Category 4 cyclone and caused considerable damage.

Townsville is Australia’s largest urban centre north of the Sunshine Coast.
Popular attractions include The Strand. It is a long tropical beach and garden strip. Reef HQ is another popular spot. It is a large aquarium with many of the Great Barrier Reef’s native flora and fauna.
The region has many popular festivals year-round. One is the annual Australian Festival of Chamber Music every July. It is an international chamber music festival. Many acclaimed international and Australian musicians perform.
