Slade Point is a suburb on Queensland’s peninsula. It is a five-minute drive from Mackay Harbour, and has a population of 3859 according to the 2011 census.
History
Captain James Cook, the leader of the First Fleet, named Slade Point. He named it thusly in honour of Sir Thomas Slade, the British Navy’s Surveyor from 1755-1771, who designed the HMS Victory.
The area became more residential following World War II. The post office at Slade Point was built in 1949. Olympic gold medallist Cathy Freeman competed in running races here as a child.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
The area is adjoined by the pretty Melaleuca Forest, and provides stunning views of sunrises and sunsets year round. Cathy Freeman Park, as well as an amateur athletics club, overlooks the western side of Slade Point.
Slade Point has a good selection of small shops and cafes, with a primary school as well. Other attractions include a bowling club and a community hall.
