Sarina is a town in the Mackay Region of Queensland. The town has a population of 5,730. The Bruce Highway passes through the town. Most of the town sits on the northern side of Plane Creek.
History
The town’s original name was Plane Creek. It adopted its current name at some time before to 1882. The name comes from the nearby Sarina Inlet. A surveyor named William Charles Borlase Wilson named the inlet after an enchantress from Greek mythology.
The area has a history of cane farming.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Tourists visit Sarina because of the nearby coastal and mountain attractions. The town has several interesting heritage sites. These include the Sarina War Memorial.
Sarina’s town centre is home to a large cane toad statue. The locals call the toad Buffy, after the Latin name “bufo marinus”. The statue is made from fibreglass and was created in the 1980s.
