Holsworthy is a south-western suburb of Sydney. It is 31 kilometres south-west of Sydney’s CBD. It has a population of over 5,000.

History

The area was once home to the Tharawal people.

The suburb’s namesake is the town of Holsworthy, in Devon, England.

In 1795, Europeans explored the area. 1798 saw grants of farming land made. Excellent crops of corn, wheat and vegetables were grown.

The Tharawal fought back. By 1815, Governor Macquarie declared war against them.

By the 1880s numerous vineyards were established. The army acquired this land in 1913. Holsworthy was the site of a civilian internment camp during World War I.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Holsworthy Barracks is a large Australian Army Reserve in the southern Holsworthy. It is a local landmark. Military training exercises occur frequently.

Holsworthy’s residential streets are named with a military theme. These include ‘Anzac’ and ‘Light Horse’. It has a large shopping centre.

Holsworthy’s bushland retains many indigenous sites. It is nicknamed ‘Sydney’s Kakadu’. There are more than 500 significant Tharawal sites. These include campsites, tool making sites and rock art.
