Gilgandra is a delightful rural town in the central west of New South Wales. Sitting on the banks of the Castlereagh River, it is located at the junction between the Newell, Oxley and Castlereagh Highways. The population is 4,386.

History

Gilgandra comes from the Aboriginal word meaning ‘long waterhole’. The town is also known as ‘Home of the Coo-ee’ after 35 men set out from Gilgandra to Sydney in 1915 to volunteer for the war. En-route they recruited over 250 men making it the first and most successful recruitment march of WW1.

During the 1960s, it became known as the ‘Town of the Windmills’. The skyline was dominated by over 300 windmills with most residents owning one before a central water supply was established.

Gilgandra is a farming district known for grain, sheep and cattle. Other industries include pigs, poultry, ostrich, emu, deer, olives and buffalo.

There are lots to see and do in this area and the town has a great community spirit. It is the gateway to the Warrumbungle National Park. The Coo-ee Heritage and Visitor Centre is a good point to start for those wanting to explore the town.
