Yarralumla is a large inner suburb of Canberra. It has a population of 2,922 and sits to the south west of the city.

History

The suburb extends along Lake Burley Griffin. The lake came into existence following the Second World War. This followed the blocking of the Molonglo River.

The Yarralumla brickworks arrived here in 1913. A temporary camp followed soon after to accommodate the workers. The suburb expanded rapidly in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Many private homes cropped up in the area at this time.

Lifestyle and entertainment

Yarralumla is home to many places of historical interest. Most notable is Government House, home of the Governor-General.

The Royal Canberra Golf Club can be found in Yarralumla. This is alongside the Yarralumla Yacht Club. As a result, both sailing and golf are popular pastimes here.
