Australian Capital Territory

The Australian Capital Territory has much to offer: beautiful natural scenery, a rich cultural scene, wonderful history and happy, hard-working people. With so many things to see, do and experience, you’re never far away from the action. The ACT occupies a small section of land within the southern region of NSW but is a self-governing internal territory. The ACT is also the home of our nation’s capital city, Canberra, as well as large stretches of national parkland.

The territory was established as a result of colonial delegates decreeing that a national capital land should be established to host the newly founded Federal Government. By 1913, the township of Canberra was instated as the national capital city. Within the city of Canberra, the centre for Australian politics, Parliament House, can be found. One of the most iconic sights in the whole of Australia, Parliament House features an 81 metre flagpole that hoists a flag bigger than a double decker bus. This acclaimed building has panoramic views from the rooftop, a cafe, a famed art collection and beautifully landscaped gardens. A magnificent architectural attraction in itself, the colourful and uniquely designed museum is a definite must-see. Take a wander across the impressive and thought provoking Garden Of Australian Dreams and marvel at the sculptural loop entrance before heading inside. There is an entire world inside, with galleries upon galleries detailing history across the globe as well as in Australia.

Channel your inner Turner or Picasso with a trip to the National Gallery of Australia and its regularly updated Family Activity Room during blockbuster exhibitions. The Children’s Gallery encourages kids to be stimulated by art. Have fun in the Sculpture Garden, or simply walk through the gallery to soak up the history, innovation and creativity.
