The population of Wanniassa is more than 7,700. It is one of the suburbs of Canberra. In a recent census, the average age of people in the town was 37.

History

The small town takes its name from the Indonesian town of Wanayasa. In the 1830s Thomas McQuoid, who owned land in West Java, was given a property in Wanniassa and made the link.

Streets in the town were named after politicians from nearby Victoria. It gained gazetted status in 1974.

The Erindale Centre is the main shopping area, and it has a wide range of facilities including many shops and services.
The main town also has a choice of restaurants and supermarkets. There are many sporting opportunities, a theatre, and several churches in the area. Good transport links exist to nearby suburbs and Canberra itself. Residents in Wanniassa today are mainly Australia-born.
