Turner is an inner Canberra suburb based 2.3km south of the central business district. It’s part of the City of Canberra local government area, and has a population of more than 3,600.

History

Turner was founded in 1928, and named in honour of the politician Sir George Taylor. Sir Taylor was an important presence as Australia found its feet, co-founding the constitution and serving as Federal Treasurer under prime ministers Edmund Barton, Alfred Deakin and George Reid. In the 1940s and 50s, Turner was developed as a ‘garden city’, with wide roads and many nature strips.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

A leafy, open suburb, Turner is known for its beautiful parks. These include Haig Park and Turner Parkland, through both of which runs Sullivans Creek. The area also features tennis and lawn bowls clubs, as well as several churches. Turner is well positioned, with easy access to the shops and attractions of Black Mountain, Braddon, O’Connor and Canberra Central.
