Tuggeranong is a district in the ACT. It has 19 suburbs. It occupies 117 square kilometres to the east of the Murrumbidgee River. Its current population is 86,900.

History

The Ngunnawal people occupied the area prior to British settlement. Historians discovered Aboriginal cave paintings and artefacts. The suburb’s name comes from the Ngunnawal expression meaning “cold place”.

The first authorised settler was James Murdoch in 1824. However, the town further developed in the 1970’s. The first families moved into the suburb of Kambah in 1974.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Luke Tuggeranong was created in 1987 near the Murrumbidgee River. Community facilities surround the lake, including a library. West of the lake is the town centre. The Centro Tuggeranong Hyperdome is the major shopping centre.

71% of residents stated their ancestry as Australian or Anglo-Saxon. The median age of residents is 35.
