Spence is a residential suburb in Belconnen, Canberra. It sits near the suburbs of Fraser, Melba and Evatt, and has a population of 2,559.

History

The town takes its name from William Spence, one of the founders of the Australian Trade Union. He was also a member of the first Australian House of Representatives. All streets are named after trade unionists.

The local primary school, Spence Primary school, was founded in 1977. It later merged with the Melba Primary school and became Mt Rogers Community School – Spence Campus. In 1998, the school closed due to poor enrolments.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Spence has a neighbourhood oval, which has been in disrepair since the 2003 drought. There is a water tower located in the northwest of the suburb.

The local shopping centre has a butcher, hairdresser, baker and chemist. In 2012, the supermarket, mechanics workshop and auto electrician were replaced with a 7-Eleven.
