Reid is a residential suburb in Canberra, located directly next to Civic. With a population of 1,583, it is one of the oldest suburbs in Canberra.

History

The suburb is named after Australia’s fourth Prime Minister, Sir George Reid. Aboriginal words inspired the street names.

The foundation stone of St. John the Baptist Church was laid in 1841. However, most of the suburb wasn’t constructed until 1927. It was a housing precinct planned on Garden City principles and is now heritage-listed. The four-storey Bega flats were built in 1957 to cope with a lack of accommodation. The Heritage Council refused to heritage list the building.
