Molonglo is a district in Canberra used for pine forests. It is Canberra’s newest district. Thirteen suburbs will form the Molonglo district. The current population is 27.

History

Molonglo comes from the native word meaning “thunder”. The Ngunnawal tribe are the area’s original inhabitants.

Pine forests dominated the area prior to the 2003 Canberra Bushfires. The fires ruined the area, leaving the land empty. The Government proposed land releases. This was to support Canberra’s growing population. The government gazetted the district in 2010.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Weston Creek is to the north of the district. It is 10km west of Canberra’s central business district. The town will ACT as a link between Weston Creek and Belconnen. Experts forecasted the population will grow to 50,000.

Developers constructed two suburbs: Wright and Coombs. Judith Wright, an Aboriginal land rights activist, is Wright’s namesake. H.C Coombs, the first Reserve Bank Governor, inspired the name Coombs.
