Based in the Canberra’s Belconnen District, Hawker is a young suburb. According to the 2011 census, Hawker has a population of 2,878 people. Its neighbouring suburbs are Higgins, Scullin and Page.

History

Hawker takes its name from Charles Hawker. Charles Hawker was a member of the House of Representatives. He was also a Federal Minister in 1932. The suburb of Hawker was established in 1972.

Visitors to Hawker will notice a trend in street names. All the streets take their names from pastoral stations in the Northern Territory. The area has a group centre that boasts many businesses, shops, and dining spots.

Hawker has three schools. These schools are Hawker Primary, Hawker College, and Belconnen High. The town is popular with sports enthusiasts. The Hawker Playing Fields offer several sporting facilities. These include the Hawker Enclosed Oval and a soccer stadium. A softball centre and tennis facilities are available.
