Downer is a leafy area in Canberra’s popular inner north. It has 3,555 residents.

History

The buildings of Downer Village were built for the CSIRO. Until the area became a suburb in 1960, it was a research facility.
The surrounding land was a large plantation of opium poppies, used in medicine.

Today, the poppies are gone and housing on big blocks fill the wide, leafy streets.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Canberra’s inner north is an ‘it’ region for public servants, young families and couples. Downer is poised for renewal. Developers are building a range of housing for low-income residents. Young families are moving into the area.

Developers have transformed the once derelict Downer Shops. Cafes, restaurants and other local businesses will open on the site. When construction is complete, it will be a thriving community centre.

Downer also has parks and a big oval.
