Based in the ACT, Dickson is a suburb in Canberra’s Inner North. It neighbours Braddon and Ainslie. According to the 2011 census, Dickson has a population of over 2,100 people.

History

Canberra’s original airport was in Dickson. The suburb achieved gazetted status in 1929. However, the area was not settled until the 1960s.

Dickson takes its name from Sir James Dickson. He was one of the founders of the Australian Constitution. Unlike many of Canberra’s suburbs, Dickson’s streets do not have a theme.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Dickson Centre is the main commercial centre in the area. It has a Woolworths Supermarket that has the biggest turnover in Australia. The centre also houses an ambulance station, church, offices, and shops.

Dickson is home to the radio and television studios of the ABC. The suburb also boasts large sporting feels with several ovals. The sports played on these ovals are soccer, cricket, and rugby.
