Calwell is a Canberra suburb based 24km south of the central business district. It’s part of the Tuggeranong district, and sits just off the Monaro Highway. Calwell has a population of more than 5,800.

History

Although first gazetted in 1975, Calwell wouldn’t formally exist until 1986. The suburb is named in honour of Arthur Augustus Calwell. Arthur Calwell was a Labour politician who served as leader of the opposition from 1960 to 1967. The suburb soon became a popular place to live, thanks to the presence of the Monaro Highway. This provides direct access to both Canberra City and Cooma.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Calwell has its own shopping centre, which features a Woolworths, a bar, a Chinese restaurant, and various other shops and businesses. The Brindabella Blues Football Club is based in Calwell, as is the Tuggeranong Netball Association. Calwell has three schools and three churches, as well as a retirement home.
