History

Waroona was settled in 1891. The name Waroona is thought to be a corruption of Werroona. This means “resting place” in the Djadja Wurrung language. Werroona was a town in Victoria, near Bendigo.

The construction of a railway provided work for the local timber mill in the late 1800s. It also enriched the life of the town, which expanded its amenities to cater for the mill workers. Later, during the Great Depression, workers who had fallen on hard times built Waroona’s first Damn.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Waroona is a largely agricultural town on the South Western Highway. The local visitor’s centre is also the home of the art and crafts gallery. The Waroona Heritage trail displays the town’s historic past and artistic present.
