Waikiki is a coastal suburb in Perth with a population of more than 11,000 people. It has close links with the nearby town of Safety Bay.

History

The area was settled in the mid-1830s when colonialists began searching for a suitable harbour. They wanted to create a site for the whaling industry.

The harbour proved unusable for shipping purposes, and became known as the Peel Basin.

Safety Bay and nearby Waikiki grew during the early 1900s and are mainly residential areas of Perth.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Waikiki is home to the Waikiki Village shopping centre. The complex offers a great choice of retail and commercial outlets. The sheltered beach at Safety Bay attracts families for relaxing holidays. Windsurfers and surfers are also catered for.

The coast here is part of Shoalwater Islands Marine Park. It has a massive variety of birds and marine life.
