Thornlie is a large suburb of Western Australia 16 kilometres south-east of Perth’s central business district. It has a population of around 22,900 and is surrounded by parks.

History

The first settler of the area of Thornlie was Captain Peter Pegus. He originally called the town Coleraine in 1829. In 1834, his property was burned in a fire and he moved from the area. Thornlie gets its name from a farm called Thornlie Park. It was the home of Frank and Amy James in 1884.

In 1937, the James family sold their home and land to a mine manager called Nat Harper. He died in 1954 and the land was put up for auction. By 1957, forty houses had been built. There were 100 homes in the area by 1958.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Thornlie is home to two large shopping centres called the Forest Lakes Forum and Thornlie Shopping Centre. The suburb has great transport links, such as a railway station. Sporting options include gyms, ovals and tennis courts. You can find a swimming pool, baseball park and a skate park in Thornlie too.

There are lots of parks and cycle paths, as well as takeaway outlets and restaurants. Thornlie also has the Don Russell Performing Arts Theatre, along with hotels and medical services.
