Serpentine is a town in Western Australia. 55km south-southeast of the capital Perth and 7km south of Mundijong. It has a small population of around 750.

History

Serpentine was one of the original stations when the South Western Railway between Perth and Bunbury was opened in 1893.

The government opened up land in the area in 1891 by declaring the Serpentine Agricultural Area. In 1893, they decided there was enough demand for town lots. The Townsite of Serpentine was gazetted in December 1893. It gets its name from the nearby Serpentine River. The name is derived from the “serpentine” nature of the river at its lower reaches. It was discovered and named in the 1830s.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Serpentine is the town to which the BOM weather radar has been shifted. This was following on from the original location in West Perth. The town is also home to the Bodhinyana Buddhist Monastery.
