Rockingham is a fantastic city in Western Australia with a population of about 14,000. It is located south-west of Perth’s city centre and is known as an aquatic playground.

History

The name Rockingham comes from a sailing ship called Rockingham. It was one of three ships bought by a man called Thomas Peel. He used his vessels to carry settlers to Western Australia in 1830.

Thomas Peel’s ship, Rockingham, was blown ashore in the suburb. It was abandoned after he failed to refloat it. The ship eventually broke and sunk in the water. It was the settlers who camped near the wreck that used the name Rockingham for the area of land.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Rockingham has two large shopping districts with lots of supermarkets, stores and food courts. The town is great for eating out and has a KFC, McDonald’s and Hungry Jack’s, as well as three Chinese restaurants.

There are some nice wineries and galleries in the area. Rockingham offers plenty of coastal activities including swimming, fishing and snorkelling, along with various walks. The suburb is home to the Catalpa Memorial and Naval Memorial Park too.
