Port Hedland is the second largest town in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. It has an estimated population of 15,191. It is the site of the highest tonnage port in Australia.
History
The coastline of Port Hedland was first explored in the 18th century, but it wasn’t until 1863 that it was first considered as a potential export port. The town was named after Captain Peter Hedland, who was one of the first Europeans to explore the harbour. The area has been the location of iron ore mines since the 1960s.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
A former immigration detention facility is now an oceanfront resort for tourists. There are plenty of lookouts along a beachfront path from which visitors can view marine mammals including bottlenose and snubfin dolphins. Each year the town hosts the Blackrock Stakes, a 122-kilometre race in which competitors push wheelbarrows packed with iron ore.
