North Coogee is a coastal residential suburb in Perth, Western Australia. It’s located 23km from Perth’s central business district.

History

The suburb is directly north of the suburb of Coogee, which takes its name from Lake Coogee. Coogee means “body of water” in the Nyoongar language. Originally the lake was named Lake Munster, after Prince William, the Earl of Munster.

The area was formed in December 2005 and includes parts of surrounding suburbs, including Hamilton Hill, Spearwood and Coogee.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Stockland wanted to develop the Bradken Foundry and surrounding land to build a housing estate. However, this was protested by a local group of residents, Save South Beach. Despite the protests, the estate was built.

There is a marina at Port Coogee, which was also developed for housing. A former industrial area in Cockburn Coast was turned into a housing estate.
