Mt Hawthorn is a suburb of Perth with a population of 7,357.

History

James Hicks, Edward Wittenoom and C. L. W. Clifton purchased the area in the 1890s. It had been chosen for development in 1887. The three men subdivided the land in 1903. Hicks named his land Hawthorn, after the Melbourne suburb of the same name.

In 1916, Mt Hawthorn residents built Anzac Cottage. They finished the house on Kalgoorlie Street in just 24 hours. Anzac Cottage was a home for veterans, also intended to honour the dead. Gallipoli veteran Private John Porter and his wife were the first to live there. Porter’s deceased friend Leslie Wilkinson is honoured with a plaque.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Mt Hawthorn’s best-known landmark is Axford Park. The park sits opposite the intersection of Oxford Street and Scarborough Beach Road. It takes its name from Thomas Axford, a local recipient of the Victoria Cross and the Military Medal.
