Merredin is a town in the Central Wheatbelt of Western Australia. It has a population of more than 4,800. It’s located halfway between Perth and Kalgoorlie.
History
Merredin was founded as a stopping point on the way to nearby goldfields in the early 1800s. Its importance grew in the late 19th century when a water catchment scheme was built nearby. Local Aboriginals called the town ‘Merriding’, which is where the name Merredin comes from.
The town is now mainly known for its agriculture. It produces 40% of Western Australia’s wheat quota.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
There are a number of historical sites to see in Merredin. Many of these relate to the railway, and the town is the middle stop for services between Perth and Kalgoorlie. Attractions include a railway museum, a military museum, the Merredin Waterfall, and a heritage trail. There is also an aerodrome used for training by China Southern Airlines.
