Margaret River is a town in the South West of Western Australia. In the valley of the Margaret River, it lies 277km from Perth. It has a population of 4,500.

History

Margaret River shares its name with the river, which is said to be named after Margaret Whicher in 1831. She was the cousin of John Garrett Bussell, the founder of Busselton.

European migrants lived there from 1850. Timber logging started in the area in around 1870 and by 1910, the town had a hotel which operated as the post office.

After WW1, the government tried to attract migrants to WA to set up farms. This led to over 100 new settlers to the town in 1922.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The coast is a well-known surfing location with worldwide fame for its surf breaks. The surrounding area is a wine region known for its tourism. Hundreds of caves are also located near Margaret River, including Mammoth Cave.
