Leonora is a small town in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. It is 833 kilometres to the north-east of Perth and 237 kilometres to the north of Kalgoorlie. It has a population of 779.

History

European pioneer John Forrest discovered Leonora in 1869. He named the location after his six-year-old niece, Frances Leonora Hardey.

Thanks to the discovery of gold in 1894, the area began to thrive. The Sons of Gwalia gold mine rocketed Leonora to fame, and in 1897, the area became formally known as Leonora.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Surrounding the town are many old gold mining centres and cemeteries. The town itself has many historic buildings and a picturesque main street.

The town plays host to many of Northern Goldfield’s sporting events. There is a well-equipped recreation centre that caters for all health and fitness pursuits. The nearby Malcolm Dam is a popular birdwatching spot and is home to many species of native birds.
