The area is named after a nearby lake, which was named after the Surveyor General of Western Australia, Stanford King. It was Marshall Fox, a surveyor from Narrogin, who suggested that the area be named after King.

It struggled through the Depression, but thrived after the war, mainly because of the high wool and wheat prices. The Lake King Progress Association lobbied the government to declare it a town in 1935. It was officially gazetted in 1936.
