This now-abandoned township used to be known as Austin. It is found in the Murchison region of WA, and sits in the centre of an island on Lake Austin.
History
Lake Austin and the town were both called in honour of surveyor Robert Austin. He was the first European to arrive in the area and chart the land he found. He actually named the lake, the Great Inland Marsh, but it was later changed.
When journeying through the area Mr Austin noted that ‘the geological features indicate rich goldfields’. A mine was established in the town by the late 1890s, and a bi-weekly coach provided transport links.
The town itself was gazetted in 1895.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
The town of Lake Austin is no longer inhabited. The few buildings in the settlement can still be seen when travelling along the nearby Great Northern Highway.
