Kwinana Town Centre is a suburb in the city of Kwinana, in the outer southern suburbs of Perth. Nearby suburbs include Calista, Parmelia, Willard and Orelia.

History

The town’s name is taken from the wreck of the SS Kwinana, which lies on the shore at Kwinana Beach. The ship was damaged by a fire in 1920, before it was brought to Freemantle. In 1922 while at Careening Bay, the ship was blown ashore by a storm to the spot where it rests today. The area near the wreck became known as Kwinana and earned gazetted status in 1937.

The name comes from the Aboriginal word meaning “pretty maiden”.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The suburb consists of three large blocks and has no residential housing. Instead, it has the Kwinana Hub Shopping Centre, the Kwinana Recreation Centre, Kwinana Aquatic Centre and police and council chambers.
