Kwinana Beach is a suburb of Perth. It is a highly industrial area, and is part of the City of Kwinana.

History

The name ‘Kwinana’ comes from an Aboriginal word. It means either ‘pretty maiden’ or ‘young woman’. Kwinana Beach takes its name from the ship SS Kwinana. The ship was wrecked in the area in 1922. This led to locals calling the area ‘Kwinana Wreck’.

The township was officially established in 1937. At first, it was a residential area. Various industries arrived throughout the 20th century. The controversial 1963 Perth Metropolitan Region Scheme chose Kwinana Beach for industrial development. This led to complaints from residents. Many were forced to leave the suburb.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The Perth Motorplex calls Kwinana Beach home. The Motorplex has a dirt track speedway as well as a drag racing strip. It is one of Australia’s most modern speedway facilities.
