Kojonup is a town 256 kilometres south-east of Perth. Its name is believed to refer to the ‘Kodja’, or stone axe, made by Indigenous Australians from local stone. It has a population of more than 1,800.
History
The Noongar people are the traditional owners and inhabitants of Kojonup. The first European in the area was surveyor Alfred Hillman who arrived in 1837/ He was guided to a freshwater spring by the Noongar people. In 1837 a military post was established for the protection of travellers. By 1845 this outpost had grown to support a military barracks, which stands on its original site and houses the Kojonup Pioneer Museum.
