Katanning is a town 277 kilometres south-east of Perth, Western Australia. It has a population of 3,808, and a relatively large Muslim population of 350.
History
In 1870, sandalwood cutters moved into the area but they did not settle. The township was founded in 1889 upon the arrival of the Great Southern Railway.
The majority of local Muslims came from the Cocos Islands to work in the local abattoir, which was built in the late 1970s.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
The town is a regional service centre for the Great Southern Railway. It is home to a mosque, as well as Anglican, Baptist, Catholic, Lutheran, Seventh Day Adventist, Uniting, and Wesleyan churches, and a Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall. The town’s entrance features an antique truck loaded with imitation wool bales, a windmill, and sculptures of sheep.
