Karrinyup is a relatively green suburb In Perth. It is just 12 kilometres outside Perth’s CBD but has a wealth of parkland and natural bushland. Its population is 8,500 people.

History

The town’s name came from an Aboriginal word for the nearby swamp. ‘Careniup’ is thought to mean ‘the place where bush kangaroos graze’.

The land was originally settled in the mid-1840s but it wasn’t until the 1950s that more rapid growth began.

A long-standing feature of the area is the Lake Karrinyup Country Club and golf course.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Today the town has all of the facilities expected from a city suburb. There is a bus station, library and community centre, as well as a choice of primary schools. Two golf courses are available.

A large shopping centre has two major department stores and host of other outlets.
