With a population of 10,159, Hillarys is a suburb of Perth. It is located to the north of the city, on the coast.

History

The suburb takes its name from Bertram John Hillary. Hillary was an early settler in the area. He arrived during the Great Depression. He and his family were the only residents of the area for many years.

During World War II, the Australian Army named the area Hillary’s Beach. Since the area has become urbanised, this name was shortened. The suburb became more developed towards the end of the 20th century.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Hillarys is built on the waterfront. It has a range of aquatic attractions. These include Hillarys Boat Harbour and Marmion Marine Park. Hillarys Boat Harbour hosts the Aquarium of Western Australia. Ferries run to Rottnest Island. Local beaches include Sorrento Beach and Whitford Beach.

The suburb has a small shopping centre, Hillarys Shopping Centre.
