Herdsman is a suburb in Perth, WA and is within the City of Stirling. It’s situated around Herdsman Lake and Herdsman Lake Regional Park. It’s 7lm north-west of Perth’s central business district.

History

Herdsman Lake inspired the area’s name. The lake was first known as Great Lake, but it was recorded as Herdsman Lake by the Surveyor General, J.S. Roe in 1836. The name most likely comes from the area’s history as a farming area. It provided good grazing and stock were most likely herded there.

It was gazetted in 1928.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

In the 1980’s, swampland to the north of the lake was reclaimed to build a light industrial park around Walters Drive. Prior to this, businesses along Scarborough Beach Road backed onto the swamp. The area is now part of the light industrial suburb of Osborne Park, but is still commonly called Herdsman.
