History
The first European to visit Gingin was explorer George Fletcher Moore, in 1836. The name of the town comes from the Aboriginal name “Jinjin”, which means “footprint” or “place of many streams”. The first property was Gingin Station in 1841, and the area became a town in 1883.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
As a farming town, Gingin’s mild climate and abundance of water is ideal for farming. The local area farms beef cattle, cereal crops, olives, oranges and mangoes. Gingin also hosts the annual British Car Day, an event held on the third Sunday in May.
Gingin is also near the Australian International Gravitational Observatory, which measures gravitational waves and conducts free fall experiments.
