Situated on the coast of the Southern Ocean, Esperance is a town in Western Australia. It has a population of 9,919 and is 720 kilometres from Perth.
History
Although Dutch explorers passed by in 1627, the first Europeans to land in Esperance were the French. The town takes its name from the French ship that landed near the modern day town in 1792.
As more and more people arrived, many local industries flourished. Esperance attracted whalers, sealers, pirates, pastoralists, and miners. Gold was discovered in the fields to the north.
When the Skylab space station broke up in 1979, pieces of the craft landed throughout Esperance.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Today, Esperance is a thriving tourist destination. It sits within easy reach of five national parks. These include Cape le Grand National Park, which is popular for fishing, hiking and off-road driving.
Esperance’s visitors also enjoy scuba diving, surfing, and swimming on the local beaches.
