With a population of over 2,700 people, Dongara is a town in Western Australia. It lies 351km north-northwest of Perth and sits at the mouth of the Irwin River.

History

The name Dongara comes from the Wattandee word “Thung-arra”. The word Thung-area means “sea lion place”.

European settlers first arrived in the area in 1853. By the 1860s, the local river flats were occupied by ex-convict farmers. In 1871, Dongarra was officially recognised as a town and became the seat of the Shire of Irwin.
