History

Capel was one of the earliest areas to be settled in the 19th century. The idea for a town was suggested in 1844, but the first land was not sold until 1897. To begin with the town had the indigenous Australian name of Coolingnup, but it became Capel in 1899.

The Capel Golf Club is private, but it allows visitors most days. It has a dress code. The Capel Vale Winery is open to visitors.
