Cannington’s local government area is the City of Canning. It is a suburb of Perth in Western Australia with a population of over 40,000.

History

The name Cannington comes from the Canning River. It was once known as Waverley. A man called William Lacey Gibbs owned most of the land in Cannington between the years 1860 and 1883.

Cannington was subdivided in 1882. The railway station was built in the 1890s opposite what is now East Cannington.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The suburb is home to one of the largest shopping complexes in the Perth metropolitan area. It’s called Westfield Carousel and was originally built in 1972. The shopping centre was updated in the 1990s and now has a cinema.

If you walk along the Canning River, you’ll find walking tracks and picnic areas. There is also the Woodloes Museum and various sports facilities. Cannington also has the Canning showgrounds, which has a greyhound track and exhibition centre.
