The suburb of Byford on the edge of Perth was originally named “Beenup” which was a misinterpretation of the Aboriginal word for Beenyup Brook. This name had been applied to a railway siding in the area. The name was changed to Byford in 1920 and the area has a population of over 3,300 people.

History

The first European settlers in the area acquired small parcels of land in the 1840s. Up until the early part of the twentieth century, the population was mainly rural. Byford started to develop as a more urban area when brickmaking was introduced after the turn of the 20th century.
From around 1913 to 1964 when the last brickworks in Byford closed down, this was a booming industry fuelled by the huge building developments taking place in the area.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The town has all of the facilities that you would expect from a residential suburb. There are still some farms in the area and it is served by two state schools and plenty of sports venues including the sporting oval.

The commercial area includes a selection of shops and businesses which include a flour mill. Transport is provided mainly by the road network as the local railway
