The suburb of Perth used to be called West Guildford. It dates back to the 1820s, and has a population of just under 10,000 people.

History

The area around Bassendean was settled in 1829 because of its favourable location near the Swan River. The town’s current name was not given until 1922.

By the 1940s the town had a primary school, bowling green, croquet lawn, tennis courts, and plans for other sporting facilities.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The town is home to the Western Australia Rail Transport Museum and has a collection of steam and diesel engines. The centre has an exhibit featuring all of the characters from the well-loved Thomas the Tank Engine series.

Peter Broun, the first Colonial Secretary of WA, and Adem K, a musician from the band Turnstyle, both lived in the town.
