Augusta is a town on the south-west coast of Western Australia, where the Blackwood River meets Flinders Bay. It has a population of over 1,200. Many people retire here.
History
Founded in 1830, Augusta was named after Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex. The 1880s saw the town’s timber industry expand following the construction of a nearby timber mill. In July 1986, a pod of 114 false killer whales was stranded at Town Beach. Volunteers saved 96 of the whales.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Augusta is the closest town to Cape Leeuwin, the furthest south-west corner of Australia. Visitors can go fishing, wind-surfing, paddling, and snorkelling. They also enjoy whale-watching from June to August. Tourists can visit Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse, and participate in a tour to its top. Nearby Jewel Cave is home to one of the longest straw stalactites in the world.
