History

The first people to live in Williamstown were an indigenous Australian tribe called the Yalukit-Willam clan. In 1837, the first sales of land occurred in Williamstown. In 1838, convicts built a jetty out of stone, and a ferry started sailing between Melbourne and Williamstown. This ferry transported both passengers and animals. In the 1850s, the gold rush caused the suburb to grow massively in size.
